I arranged this virtual studio day as a tribute to the English silhouettist A. Darbyshire.
Silhouette cutting takes place online. All my studio days consist of a series of 10-minute portrait sittings, which take place over Zoom.
After booking your sitting(s) you’ll receive an email ticket containing a Zoom link and further information. I’ll also send a reminder shortly before the event.
On the day you’ll be asked to log in to the Zoom event two minutes before the time you chose. I’ll cut silhouettes of you and your family and pop them in the post afterwards.

Who was A. Darbyshire?
I can’t tell you much about Darbyshire, as I’ve only ever seen one silhouette signed by him. This was created at the Adelaide Gallery in London in 1840. It’s a professional paper-cut silhouette with fine bronzing, indicating that it was made by an artist with many years experience. It’s hard to say why no more silhouettes of his have come to light. Perhaps the most likely explanation is that the Adelaide Gallery didn’t encourage in-house artists to sign their work.

The Adelaide Gallery was based in Adelaide Street, London, north of Strand. It’s better known for its pioneering work in early photography and is regarded as an important part of the mid nineteenth century artistic world. The fact that there was also a silhouette studio there is a just footnote in the story.
